History and Campus
Founding
Central Michigan University (CMU) was founded in 1892 as Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. The school’s primary focus was to train teachers for Michigan’s rapidly expanding public school system. In 1895, the Michigan State Board of Education assumed control of the school, renaming it Central Michigan Normal School. The school continued to grow, and by 1918, the campus consisted of 25 acres with five buildings.
