Food Items You Shouldn’t be Giving to Your Cat

Watching all those cat and mouse TV shows made us believe that cats like eating mice or birds and other little animals for fun while having cream milk as their regular diet. But in reality, these are the food items we don’t prefer giving to our pet cats.

If you have just gotten a pet kitten or a cat and aren’t sure what food items that we are used to believing cats love aren’t actually good for your cat, then stick with us as we reveal some shocking ones down below:

Milk and other Dairy Products

The first thing that comes to mind when feeding a cat is warm milk or cream. But while those furry little felines seem to enjoy all that, it isn’t necessarily good for them. Most cats are lactose intolerant, meaning that their stomachs can’t digest cow’s milk which can lead to diarrhea and vomiting and can lead to dehydration. There are lactose-free options available which can be given as a treat sometimes but overall, dairy products aren’t preferred for pet cats.

You can search for alternate lactose-free products if you occasionally want to treat your cat with some yummy stuff. You can check them out online and order from the comfort of your home. Speaking of online, if you are looking for an internet service for your home or office that is superfast and reliable, then check out Spectrum’s deals and subscribe to the required plan.

Chocolate

Most of us love eating chocolates, but your cat might not be like you in that case. While they might seem to enjoy eating a bar of milk chocolate, it isn’t good for them at all.

Other than the sugars and fats, chocolates contain caffeine and theobromine, which are harmful to your feline friends. So make sure NEVER to give your cat chocolate, even if it begs you for it, especially the dark or baker’s quality chocolate that contains a larger quantity of cocoa powder.

Bread and Yeast

A good loaf of plain baked bread might be fine for your cat, but bread and yeast, in general, aren’t recommended to feed your feline buddy. Bread is mostly carbs that have no nutritional value to your cats, and don’t even think of spreading some butter or chocolate on it, which can be toxic for them. In short, bread and yeast isn’t preferred food for cats due to their nutritional value and also because yeast can produce carbon dioxide and ethanol alcohol posing a serious threat to your pet.

Raw Meat or Eggs

Raw meat or eggs contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning to not only humans but cats as well. Now, you might think why stray cats can eat all that raw meat while your pet cat might not. The reason is that stray cats have stronger stomach acid and are used to eating what they hunt without cooking, while your beloved pet cats aren’t used to eating a lot more than their regular diet. So make sure to cook any meat before feeding your pet cat.

Citrus Fruits

All citrus fruits are mildly toxic to cats. Even if you might think they’ll enjoy eating a good clement or orange, they won’t. That is because of the varying level of citric acid and essential oils that these fruits contain, which can be bad for your cat’s nervous system and can even lead to seizures, tremors, and death. So just avoid sharing citrus fruits with your furry friends at all costs.

Fat Trimmings and Bones

Don’t feed your scrap to cats; fat trimmings, either cooked or uncooked, can cause intestinal problems, diarrhea, and vomiting and can even lead to serious issues like pancreatitis. Bones can cause your cat to choke or can splinter and cause intestinal obstruction and other serious issues. So avoid feeding your cat with such scrap and leave them on their regular diet instead.

Liver

Some cat treats contain liver, and a small amount of it isn’t that bad. But too much liver can cause Vitamin A toxicity in cats. It is a serious condition that greatly impacts a cat’s bones and can cause deformation, osteoporosis, and even death. So just give your pet a treat a few times a week or so and keep them on their regular prescribed diet for the most part.

Wrapping Up

We understand that cats are cute, and you might want to treat them with the food you find tasty for yourself, but cats’ nutritional needs aren’t like ours. So, just avoid giving the above food items to your feline friends to make sure they stay healthy and happy!
